The Circle of Life:  Importance of Geometrical shapes in our Life

I will be honest that I got inspired by this story called The Circle of Life from the title song of Disney’s The Lion King which is still running in the theaters.

In the Lion King, Mufasa explains that while Simba is all flesh and blood, as he is, they will one day return to the nothingness they were in, and their death will feed other animals that will ultimately meet the same fate.

The importance of Geometrical shapes in our Life

Pyramids are triangular in shape
Pyramids represents a significant Geometrical shape

Geometry plays an important role in our lives and touches every aspect of our lives. Let me start with the moon which has been in news off-late because of Chandrayan-2. A full Moon is a perfect example of a circle while the Pyramids of Egypt are triangular.  If you notice, our daily life is surrounded by objects which have some very familiar geometrical shapes. The mug in which you drink your coffee is cylindrical while the clock in the coffee shop which tells you that your friend is late is circular. The table on which you keep your coffee mug is rectangular while the mouth of the cup is circular.

For somebody like me who is obsessed with cleanliness, the bed linen has to be laid down in a symmetrical direction. The pillows have to be kept perpendicular to the direction in which the stripes on the bed linen are flowing. And remember that the bed on which you sleep is square or a rectangle while a pillow is rectangular.

So how do the various Geometrical shapes touch the circle of Life?

Various Geometrical shapes
Squares and Rectangles, Circle and Triangles

Straight Line: Life

A straight line that runs between point A to point B signifies that life has to move in a particular direction.

Straight Line between 2 points
A Straight Line joins the Beginning and the End

Point A is the start of the journey while point B is the culmination of the journey at the destination. To the naked eye, the line looks straight without any bends. This is how others see our lives. They only see the smooth side of our lives. A life without any hiccups and how we have been blessed with everything.

A straight line doesn't appear to be a straight line
A straight Line when viewed under a microscope

But when the same line is observed under a microscope, it is full of ups and downs just like an ECG. Yes, life for everybody is full of ups and downs sometimes taking you high and sometimes making you fall. You bend this straight line from both ends and it becomes a person’s circle of life.

Circle: Mother

A Circle represents a mother
A Circle has the same radius

The best person in any family which is a perfect example of a Circle is Mother. A mother touches every member of the family with the same love. Her love is like the radius of the circle. You measure from any point of the circumference; it will always remain constant. In a mother’s circle of life, her love remains the same for all –  spouse, her kids, her parents, and her grandchildren.

Triangle: Father

The Circle Of Life in a Triangle
Fathers are like Triangles giving you directions

Nobody represents a triangle better than a Father in our circle of Life. A triangle has three sides and an equilateral triangle is one in which all sides are equal. The 2 angles on the base of the triangle are the “Angle of love” and “Angle of direction”. While nobody can question a father’s love for his kids and family, it is the father who gives direction to the family and his kid’s future.

Square: Family

Square has got 4 corners
Square represents a Family

A Square with all 4 sides equal represents a family in the circle of life. The 4 corners are the 4 pillars of the family – Father, Mother, Son, and Daughter. Each of the corners is at equal distance from the rest of the corners representing the bond of love which is equal for all.

Rectangle: Work and Family

The sides of a rectangle represents Work and Life
A rectangle represents your Work-Life Balance

A person’s daily life is represented by a rectangle. The sides which are longer are his commitment to work while the sides which are smaller in length are his commitment to personal life. This is the reality of life where a person devotes more time to work rather than to his family. In an ideal condition, his life should resemble a square (with all 4 sides equal in length) where he splits his time equally between work and personal life – a perfect example of the Work-Life Balance.

“I could not take any more pressures…” These are the lines from the note which the Cafe Coffee day founder V G Siddhartha wrote to his employees.Today his body has been found from the Netravati river. It is sad that we lost one of the best Indian Entrepreneur who created a home-grown coffee-chain which matched with the best international ones. We ultimately lost a leader to stress.

The learning is clear – Change your rectangle to a square in the circle of Life. Spend more time with the family and de-stress yourself.

Hexagon: Various facets of our Life

The 6 corners of Hexagon represents the 6 facets of Life
The 6 important facets of our Life

The hexagon represents the circle of life of a person on many fronts. While it is family and friends on two of its corners, it is work and career on the other two. I am counting 2 other aspects of life which are very important for a person as well as his family. It is financial stability and health. All 6 of them completes any individuals circle of life.

Heptagon: The Forces touching your daily Life

The Forces acting on our Circle of Life

In Our daily life there are so many forces which acts on our Circle of Life. The factors can be your neighbourhood or a distant Aunt. It can be your close relatives like your Bua (Paternal Aunt) or Mausi (Maternal Aunt). These are the forces which keeps you in check and at times may drive you crazy.

Sphere: Karma

A globe rotating on axis comes back to the same point
What goes around comes around

Sphere reminds you of the law of Karma in a person’s circle of life. A globe rotating on axis reminds you that what goes around comes around. It reminds a person that his actions, whether good or bad will often have consequences for that person.
