Dirty Politics: Raking up dust to make your opposition go bust
The Indian Lok Sabha Election 2019 elections are currently on. Unlike Olympics, which happen every 4 years, the Indian election takes place every 5 years. Olympic is all about glory, recognition and hard work. Sportsperson practice over years to get a foothold on the podium. Standing on the dais and saluting the national flag is a dream of every sportsperson. Sporting events like athletics, gymnasium or swimming are highly competitive but still the audience can witness a lot of bonhomie between the participants. There are times when an athlete trips over while sprinting but eventually gets a helping hand from his fellow racer. Such athletes are lauded by the audience and loved for their sportsman spirit.
Elections are like Olympics
The participants here prepare to win their constituency over a period of 5 years. Competition is intense and the fight with the nearest rival is no holds barred. The incumbent uses all his power to retain the throne while the challenger uses all the ammunition available to him to dethrone the incumbent. Apart from the 2 main competitors, there are several more in the race, each trying their luck to get to the chair. However unlike Olympic which is one of the purest forms of competition, elections is just the opposite. We don’t see politicians talking on merit and strength of their own. Instead, all they talk about is the weaknesses and the shortcoming of their opponents.
Dirty politics is good after all daag achche hai
One of the top selling detergent brands of the country has used this phrase very successfully in their advertising campaign. But I am surprised when Politicians use the same. Throwing dirt on others means that even your hands also gets dirty. What example these politicians are setting in front of the electorate? You highlight a weakness of your opponent to the people and the same action will be repeated by your opponent. Remember Newton’s 3rd Law – For every action of yours there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Raking up dead issues make politics dirty
- Your late father was a corrupt person till he died. This is a very derogatory statement about a person who was a popular PM and who sacrificed his life for the country. Whether he was corrupt was never proved in the court.
- The current PM is a guard who is also a thief. Our PM has done some excellent work on corruption so obviously he can’t be a thief and this is one characteristic about him on which the entire nation will stand by him.
- Playing around on Nation’s security.
- Another politician from the East wants to give a tight democratic slap to the PM.
- A lot of hue and cry when our neighbouring country PM says that peace has a better chance if the ruling party comes back.
Dirty politics is all about throwing dirt on others
The fight is never on merit or achievements as the politicians feel that the electorate is only hungry for dirt news. But I will request my politicians that this is not the news we appreciate. Its only good news we appreciate! Whether learned or illiterate, we all want more Job Opportunities, Good Infrastructure like China, Improved Health Facilities, and Education for the youngsters along with Care for the Old.
My request to politicians is that grow-up (not in literal sense as they already are too-grown-up). Give a chance to youngsters. The ones who have a clean image in North India had to take a back-seat in MP and Rajasthan recently even though the electorate liked them.
We want more youngsters, including our children, to join politics but not by way of creating controversy (Remember JNU) and earning a name but on sheer merit and qualification. After all even IAS today aspire for a political chair.
So don’t play dirty. Remember nobody likes dirt and even if one gets it, he immediately wipes it off.

In Olympics there are three winners. Thank God there is only one winner in election. Just imagine if we had Gold MP, Silver MP and Bronze MP……..
